Load video: Bone conduction explained

How Unison works.

Sound normally reaches your inner ear through the air, down the ear canal and across the eardrum. Bone conduction takes a different route. It sends sound as gentle vibration through the bone at your temples, straight to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrum entirely.

That is why your ears stay open. You hear the room, the doorbell, the person next to you, all of it, at the same time.

Why that helps with tinnitus. Tinnitus feels loudest when there is nothing else to hear. Sound enrichment adds a gentle background so the gap between the tinnitus and the silence gets smaller, which gives your attention somewhere else to go. Over time that supports habituation, the process by which your brain gradually stops treating the sound as important.

Habituation is slow and it is not a straight line. Unison is not a cure and nothing is. What it can change is how much of your attention the tinnitus takes.

Sonovo Unison – Bone Conduction Glasses for Tinnitus & Hearing Support - Sonovo™

Unison is not a hearing aid.

It is worth being clear about this, because the two get confused and they do different jobs.

A hearing aid is a medical device. It is prescribed, fitted and tuned to your specific hearing loss by an audiologist, and it corrects what you cannot hear. If you have been told you need one, Unison is not a replacement for it.

Unison is a personal sound amplifier. It lifts the sound already around you and delivers it through bone conduction, and it is built for people using sound enrichment as part of tinnitus habituation. No prescription, no fitting appointment, no audiologist required.

Some people use both. Because nothing goes in or over your ear, Unison does not get in the way of anything else you wear.

Out and about.

Because your ears stay open, you hear the birds, the traffic, the person walking beside you. Nothing is blocked and nothing is replaced. There is just more to listen to than the ringing.

With the people you love.

Conversation is where hearing changes hurt most. Built-in microphones lift the voices around you, so you are following the room rather than working at it.

In your own frames.

Unison frames are prescription-ready. Take them to your optician and they can fit your lenses like any other pair. One thing on your face instead of two.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Is Unison a cure for tinnitus?

No, Unison isn’t a cure for tinnitus, but it can help reduce how noticeable your tinnitus sounds feel.

By delivering gentle sound through bone conduction, Unison helps your brain focus on external sound instead of internal noise, supporting the natural process of habituation.

Can I wear Unison with a hearing aid?

Yes. Nothing goes in or over your ear, so Unison does not get in the way of anything else you wear. Some people use both, and if you have been told you need a hearing aid, Unison is not a replacement for it.

How long does the battery last, and what happens when it runs out?

You will hear a repeated beep when the battery is low. Swap in a new PR48 zinc-air battery and you are away again in seconds. There is no charging and no cable, so there is nothing to remember at bedtime. If you wear a vibrator on both sides, replace both batteries at the same time.

What if something breaks?

Most small problems are fixable rather than fatal. The arms adjust, the battery cover comes off, and we keep the parts that wear in stock. A replacement battery cover is around £1 and a screwdriver and screw set is around £3, so a small repair costs a couple of pounds rather than a new pair. Email customercare@sonovo.co.uk and we will help.

How does bone conduction help with tinnitus?

Bone conduction sends sound vibrations directly through your cheekbones to your inner ear, bypassing the eardrum.

This helps keep your hearing system active and reduces the contrast between tinnitus and silence, a key factor in long-term relief.

Can I still hear my surroundings while wearing Unison?

Yes! Unison’s open-ear design keeps your ears free, so you can hear the world around you naturally while still experiencing relief.

You’ll stay aware of conversations, traffic, and background sounds.

Can I use Unison with prescription lenses?

Absolutely. Unison frames are prescription-ready, and your optician can fit your lenses into the frame just like any regular pair of glasses.

How long does it take to notice results?

Honestly, it varies a lot.

Some people notice a difference in the first week. For others it takes considerably longer, and some find it does not suit them at all.

What Unison supports is habituation, the process by which your brain gradually stops treating the tinnitus as important. That is slow, it is not a straight line, and there will be days that feel like going backwards. Those days are normal and not a sign it is failing.

It is also not a cure. Nothing is. What can change is how much of your attention the tinnitus takes.
